Energy Efficiency: EBC, IPOSZ and the LIFE project CondoReno organise event in Budapest to boost condominium renovations in Hungary

On 8 November 8, 2024, EBC and its Hungarian member organization IPOSZ jointly hosted an impactful workshop in Budapest, Hungary, as part of the CondoReno project, which is co-funded by the European Union’s LIFE programme. The event, titled “Boosting Condominium Renovations: European Examples and the Hungarian Market,” brought together key stakeholders in the real estate, condominium, and construction sectors to discuss strategies for enhancing energy efficiency in multi-owned properties across Europe, with a focus on the unique challenges faced in Hungary.

The workshop featured a range of discussions and presentations on topics essential to the future of condominium renovations. Fernando Sigchos Jiménez, Secretary General of EBC, and Laszlo Nemeth, President of IPOSZ, opened the event with remarks underscoring the importance of local action in achieving the EU’s ambitious energy performance goals. This event also addressed the recent recast of the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD), a cornerstone of EU policy that aims to drive the energy-efficient transformation of Europe’s building stock.

Keynote speakers included Örs Ringhoffer from the Hungarian Ministry of Energy, who outlined Hungary’s building energy policy, and Julien Tami from the European Commission, who discussed upcoming regulatory changes within the EPBD. The event highlighted integrated home renovation services (IHRS), with a focus on creating “one-stop-shops” that simplify the renovation journey for condominium owners, a critical component for engaging multi-owned properties in energy efficiency improvements.

The workshop also facilitated an expert panel discussion moderated by János Juhos, Vice-President of IPOSZ. Panellists, including representatives from the National Association of Condominiums & Auditors (TSZOE) and the Hungarian Energy Efficiency Institute, shared insights on overcoming obstacles specific to Hungary, such as decision-making complexities and access to funding for condominium renovation projects. This event, part of the CondoReno project, showcased the collaborative approach necessary for sustainable renovations, emphasizing the need for better communication among public authorities, property owners, energy efficiency experts and construction companies at local level, as well as the pivotal role of local companies, specialized craft trades, and SMEs in delivering quality, energy-efficient renovations.
