This week, our Secretary General Fernando Sigchos Jiménez met with Mariano Sans, Secretary General of the Confederación Nacional de la Construcción CNC, J. Pablo Martínez Marques, EBC Board member, and the whole CNC team in Madrid.
The occasion served to solidify and deepen the collaboration between the Secretariat and the Spanish member of EBC, but also to take stock of the most pressing issues and problems in the Spanish construction sector.
As elsewhere in Europe, Spanish SMEs in the construction sector are suffering from the increasing price of materials and energy sources, a major problem as highlighted in an EBC letter to the President and Executive Vice-President of the European Commission.
Furthermore, while demand is stable and EU funds could potentially accelerate the renovation of buildings, the lack of skilled labour remains a major obstacle to the sector’s activity in Spain. During the discussions, the pressing need for an ambitious Europe-wide image campaign to change society’s view of the construction trades was discussed, as foreseen by the Construction Blueprint for skills project, in which EBC and CNC are partners. The need to better accommodate women in the sector was also highlighted.
EBC welcomes the opportunity to visit its members to review the national situation and trends and looks forward to future opportunities to do so.
