BIMExpo in Madrid – BIM should suit SMEs

The European Builders Confederation (EBC) has been invited to speak at the BIMExpo in Madrid, which is the leading European trade show for Building Information Modelling (BIM) solutions.
Several are the reasons for EBC to deal with BIM:

  • Anticipate and  prepare for the challenges & opportunities that BIM provides for small and medium companies (SMEs)
  • Achieve BIM-related objectives through the involvement of SMEs
  • Promote the added-value of BIM for renovation projects
  • Raise SME positions on BIM standardisation

Renovating existing buildings represents almost 2/3 of the construction sector’s activities. The BIM community should therefore develop BIM tools that can be adapted to the building renovation market.
Furthermore, since SMEs are 99.9% of the sector, well-designed and economically accessible digital model tools for construction SMEs are absolutely fundamental for the uptake of the “BIM revolution” in the sector. Existing tools should be simplified and training of construction professionals should have bearable costs.
Finally, the needs of micro, small and medium-sized enterprises have to be taken into consideration in the standardisation process. Small Business Standards (SBS) mandated expert Guido Sabatini follows the activities of CEN/Technical Committee on BIM to ensure SMEs are represented.
