GeoBIM Europe is one of the industry-outreach initiatives launched by Geospatial Media and Communications in 2014. It aims to highlight the fundamental role of geospatial technology in building information modelling (BIM) processes in the European construction sector.
GeoBIM Europe is the platform for geospatial community to interact closely with planners, architects, engineers, builders, building owners and operators and to discuss the potential and challenges of such integration in Europe. Aligning geospatial and BIM improves collaboration, efficiency and performance of a building/infrastructure from planning and design, to the construction, the operational and the maintenance phases.
The conference featured over 40 speakers from across Europe. The main topics being discussed included policies, standards and interoperability as well as GeoBIM best practices in building/infrastructure lifecycle. A particular emphasis was put on the 'demand' side, i.e. building operation and facilities/asset management.
EBC presented some key messages on how to make BIM an SME-friendly tool also through standardisation and on the needs of construction SMEs:
• Developing BIM tools to be adapted to the building renovation market
• Providing SMEs with economically accessible digital model tools
• Developing well-designed tools for construction SMEs
• Ensuring that digital model tools will not be prescriptive for particular products
