First scrutiny session in IMCO on late payments

The Internal Market and Consumer protection Committee (IMCO) of the European Parliament held a legislative scrutiny session on the Late Payment Directive, with the participation of DG GROW on 23 June. The Directive was adopted in 2011 in order to protect European businesses against late payment and to improve their competitiveness.

In April 2015 the directive had reportedly been transposed by only 21 of the 28 member states, despite the deadline having passed over two years. Difficulties in transposition persist, notably in Greece, but also in Italy and Spain.

EBC therefore warmly welcomes the assessment of the implementation of the directive carried out by the European Commission. EBC is also monitoring this process and is providing the Commission with information about implementation in its members’ countries.
